Every time I share this on my Facebook page, a few parents comment that they just can't make this because it sounds so disgusting.

If you're one of those parents, remember it's not for you–it's for the kids! I guarantee you that the kids will have so much fun.

But if you must call it something else, try fudge in a bag. No armpits involved!

Although this is called “fudge,” it is closer to the consistency of frosting. I haven't tried putting in the refrigerator to see if it will harden a bit to be more like fudge. That would involve patience which is not a trait most Cub Scouts possess! 🙂

I love chocolate, and I love cream cheese! So, this armpit fudge recipe is a yummy treat for me. Of course, I smush my bag with my hands instead of my armpits.

You can also smush it with your knees. Pretty much any action will work as long as you're kneading the ingredients together.

Ingredient Amounts for Your Entire Pack

Shout out to Tony who figured this out and shared in a comment! Thanks!

If you want to make armpit fudge with your entire pack, you're going to need a little more than 1/2 cup of confectioner's sugar!

Tony calculated how much of each ingredient you would need to make 50 servings of armpit fudge.

  • 8 lbs of confectioner's sugar
  • 7 sticks of butter
  • 18 oz of Cream Cheese
  • 3 oz Vanilla Extract
  • 3 cups of Cocoa powder

How to Make Armpit Fudge

Put all of the ingredients in a recloseable plastic bag. Squeeze the air out of the bag and seal it. Knead the bag until all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. You can use your armpits, your knees, your hands–anything you can think of to smush the bag!

After the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, open the bag and eat with a spoon.

This recipe can be fudge for one, or you can share it if you want.

How to Serve Armpit Fudge

We eat armpit fudge with a spoon right out of the bag! But a few people have shared cool ways of serving it.

You can use your armpit fudge as a dip for sliced apples. (That sort of makes it healthy, right? 😉 )

Give the kiddos rice krispie treats or sugar cookies to squeeze the frosting on. Simply cut a small corner off of the bag, and squeeze it out.

Dairy Allergies

When our den made armpit fudge, one of our Cub Scouts was allergic to dairy. I hate leaving out any kids who have allergies, so I asked his mom if there were ingredients we could substitute so that he could make his own armpit fudge.

She gave me the substitutions, and I wrote a separate post for that. So, if you have a Scout with a dairy allergy, you'll want to check out the recipe for dairy-free armpit fudge.

Cub Scout Requirements

This activity isn't only yummy, it counts toward Cub Scout requirements too!

Tiger Adventure Tiger Bites 6 –With your adult partner, plan and make a good snack choice or other nutritious food to share with your den.

Wolf Adventure Code of the Wolf 1c – Do five activities at home, at school, or in your den that use mathematics, and then explain to your den how you used everyday math.

Bear Adventure Bear Picnic Basket 3Select and prepare two nutritious snacks for yourself, your family, or your den.

OK, so armpit fudge might be stretching the definition of good and nutritious snacks just a bit! 🙂

What is the process of making fudge? ›

Commercial fudges are generally prepared by mixing milk, corn syrup (glucose), sugar, fat, a little salt, and suitable flavoring matter such as chocolate; cooking the resulting mixture to a temperature of about 235 F. to 245 F., while agitating the mix; cooling the mix to a temperature between 90 F.

What makes fudge soft? ›

Undercooked. This fudge was cooked until the temperature reached only108 °C (226 °F). At this temperature, the sugar is not concentrated enough... there is too much leftover water in the syrup and the resulting fudge is soft.

Why is my 3 ingredient fudge not setting? ›

The main reason is that your Fudge has not reached the optimum temperature. If your mixture only reaches 110 or 112 degrees Celsius it will always be soft. That's why we recommend investing in a sugar thermometer.

What makes high quality fudge? ›

It's the size of sugar crystals that makes the knees of fudge lovers buckle…the smaller the crystals, the less they are perceived on the tongue and the more the fudge tastes smooth and creamy. Cooking, and beating after cooking, is the key to successful fudge.

What thickens fudge? ›

If your fudge is soft or runny, it probably didn't come up to a high enough temperature while it was cooking. Put it back into the saucepan and add 1–2 US tbsp (15–30 ml) of 35% fat whipping cream. Stir the fudge as it heats, but only until the sugar in the chocolate is completely melted again.

What's the main ingredients in fudge? ›

This delicious fudge recipe is easy to make in the microwave with just 3 ingredients: chocolate chips, condensed milk, and butter. Add nuts, mini marshmallows, or candy before chilling to make this treat even more decadent, or try peanut butter chips instead of semisweet chocolate chips to make peanut butter fudge.

What is traditional fudge made of? ›

At its simplest, fudge is a dense, soft candy, often made with sugar and dairy products like butter and milk. Nowadays, fudge is usually flavored with chocolate, but you can utilize pretty much any flavor, such as peanut butter, pumpkin, even birthday cake.

What makes fudge hard or soft? ›

The amount of time you cook fudge directly affects its firmness. Too little time and the water won't evaporate, causing the fudge to be soft. Conversely, cook it too long and fudge won't contain enough water, making it hard with a dry, crumbly texture.

What is the secret to smooth fudge that is not gritty? ›

Once a seed crystal forms, it grows bigger and bigger as the fudge cools. A lot of big crystals in fudge makes it grainy. By letting the fudge cool without stirring, you avoid creating seed crystals.

Why won t my fudge go hard? ›

You didn't cook it long enough. Fudge needs to be heated to the "soft ball" stage. It is salvageable, but you'd have to be very careful of sugar crystallization. If you make a mistake you'll wind up with a grainy mess.

What do you do with failed fudge? ›

OPTION 1) Depending on how runny it is, you can either use it as a frosting for cakes, or a sauce for ice-cream. OPTION 2) Freeze it overnight. Cut it into squares. Cover each square thickly in melted chocolate, ensuring no part of the fudge is exposed.

Why do you add vanilla to fudge? ›

Vanilla is often added to chocolate candies or other chocolate recipes because it complements and accents the flavor of chocolate.

What happens if you forget the vanilla in fudge? ›

There are lots of fudge recipes around which don't use vanilla at all (it's a treat which is very open to experimentation in general). So if you don't add vanilla, it won't taste like vanilla, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will taste bad, have the wrong consistency or behave differently when cooked and cooled.

Why did my fudge fail? ›

If your fudge doesn't firm up after a few hours, you either have too high an amount of liquid to sugar, or your mixture hasn't reached the soft-ball stage. Using a candy thermometer can help home cooks avoid this problem.

What does cream of tartar do in fudge? ›

Cream of tartar is used in caramel sauces and fudge to help prevent the sugar from crystallizing while cooking. It also prevents cooling sugars from forming brittle crystals, this is why it's the secret ingredient in snickerdoodles!

What keeps fudge from getting hard? ›

Too Soft or Too Hard Fudge

The amount of time you cook fudge directly affects its firmness. Too little time and the water won't evaporate, causing the fudge to be soft. Conversely, cook it too long and fudge won't contain enough water, making it hard with a dry, crumbly texture.

How do you keep fudge smooth? ›

If the sugar crystals are not properly dissolved before cooling, they can create a gritty texture. To avoid this, ensure that you stir the fudge mixture consistently and remove any sugar crystals that form on the sides of the pan using a wet pastry brush.
