Malaysians are spoilt for choice when it comes to finding places to travel to right in our own backyard. Our country is packed with scenic beaches and stunning waterfalls, so there’s always somewhere to explore for our next road trip or staycation.

Pulau Jerejak and Sekinchan have become popular weekend getaway spots recently because of their various photo spots. But for something a little closer to Klang Valley, Jeram in Kuala Selangor is a quiet, family-friendly town that’s only an hour’s drive from KL.

If you haven’t heard about Jeram already, it’s a fishing village that’s home to Rainbow Sky Mirror Jetty and an IG-worthy jetty. But there are also natural attractions, a scenic beach, affordable seafood restaurants, and a container hotel – which we’ve rounded up in this guide of things to do around Jeram.

You can see your fair share of lush greenery in KL. But it’s nothing compared to what you can witness at countrysides such as Jeram. The town serves up 1 photo op after another as you drive through it and look out of your car window, and at its many local IG-worthy backdrops too.

To narrow it down for you, here are 3 of these spots you can drop by for photos:

Pantai Remis Beach

It’s not a trip to Jeram without dropping by Pantai Remis. This kampung beach is known as a fishing ground and spot to catch stunning sunsets over the Strait of Malacca.

You’ll be in for enchanting sights of massive trees being swallowed by high tides, and a swing set structured out of tree branches makes it a perfect excuse to sit back and relax here.

It’s not recommended that you swim at this beach because of the risk of stepping on sharp seashells and high tides, but you’ll still want to drop by this spot for family-fun activities.

There are picnic benches set up along the beach so you can bring along food to have a fun family affair while taking in the views here. But don’t worry if all the benches are occupied, as there are larger rocks along the beachfront to park yourself at.

Other activities that you can join in on here are seashell picking, fishing, kite flying, and cycling along the beach.

Sasaran Art Park

A lesser-known arts-and-culture spot at Jeram is Sasaran Art Park. This free public art park was set up by Sasaran Arts Association in 2016. Quirky sculptures and art murals from local talents can be seen scattered around its premises today to promote art in the area.

You’ll also find structures of fishes and rocks that reference the town’s fishing history in modern, wire art pieces. Some of them are 3D too, including one of a tapir made out of steel and foil with a text message mural on the wall that’s great for photos with your bae.

Walk along the perimeter of the park and you’ll see even more art on unassuming buildings, including one of a dragon mural, with wire sculptures of rhinoceros clinging on to a blue zinc wall.

You can also get a trippy shot at a mural of a shark on another red building that’s reminiscent of those photos you take at 3D illusion museums.

Besides updating your Instagram page with cool shots when you visit Jeram, there are also nature tours, a historic hill, and park to add to your itinerary list.

Shop for fresh seafood and produce at Tapak Penjaja Pantai Remis Jeram

Tapak Penjaja Pantai Remis is a market located just next to the parking lot of Pantai Remis beach. There’s fresh produce such as lala clams, prawns, fish, oysters and even scallops, going for cheaper-than-usual prices. For example, you can get 2kg of lala clams at just RM18.

You’ll also find fruits, as well as street food such as donuts and keropok lekor to munch on too.

The market opens daily from 8AM. More vendors open up shop on the weekends, so that’s when you’ll find a greater selection of fresh produce and seafood, as well as cheap clothes and trinkets.

Visit Bukit Melawati’s century-old Kuala Selangor Lighthouse

There are over 130 lighthouses in Malaysia, ranging from those accessible only by boats to others on hilltops. Near Jeram, a 113-year-old lighthouse called Kuala Selangor Lighthouse is located on the peak of Bukit Melawati, which is considered a historic hill of this quiet town. The original lighthouse known as Altingsburg Lighthousebuilt by the Dutch in 1794 was destroyed and the current one was rebuilt in its place.

Opt to tackle the hill by foot – it’s an easy 8-minute hike up – to view the lighthouse and enjoy the surrounding nature views. Or hitch a ride on a family-friendly tram that makes short rounds up and down the hill for just RM3. Its current operating hours are as follows:

Mon – Fri 8.30AM-1PM, 2PM-4.30PM
Sat & Sun 8.30AM-6PM

While you won’t be able to access the lighthouse, you’ll still be treated to stunning views of the Strait of Malacca from various lookout points on the hill it sits on. You’ll also see cannons left behind by the Dutch – remnants of an old fort called Kota Melawati – that used to protect the area here.

Tribes of Selangor silvered langurs can also be found at this hill. They are a species of leaf monkey found only on the coast of West Malaysia, and Bukit Melawati is home to many of them – which is why you’ll find many people making the trip up here to see them.

Those who are in luck will get to spot one of their babies – they have bright orange fur instead of the silver-grey colour that the adults sport.

Note: These monkeys tend to get grabby, especially if you’ve opted to get a bag of peanuts or bananas from stalls at the entrance of this hill to feed them, so it’s best to keep your valuables hidden.

Sign up for a nature tour to see fireflies

Jeram has nature tours available from morning to night. Many of these tours are also family-friendly, so those with little ones won’t have to sit out on breezy boat rides or miss out on nature sights.

One of the most popular tours here is the Fireflies Tour. A 20-minute ride on a traditional sampan or electric boat will take you through a mangrove where you’ll see over a thousand brilliant fireflies light up the surrounding trees and bushes at night.

To help reduce any air, water, noise, or light pollution, these quiet boats provide minimal harm to the environment and wildlife. You can do your part too by keeping any form of light turned off so as to not scare away the fireflies.

Tickets for adults (RM20/each) and children (RM10/each) can be bought online.

Pro tip: Plan your trip when there isn’t a full moon so skies are pitch-black, and try to drop by around 8PM, which is when you’ll see even more of these insects in the dark.

Go for a casual hike at Kuala Selangor Nature Park

Just a 2-minute drive from Bukit Melawati is Kuala Selangor Nature Park, where more Selangor silvered langurs can be spotted hanging around the parking lot. The nature park has a forest-like setting and is home to a variety of fauna and flora.

You’ll only have to fork out a small fee (RM4 for each adult and RM1 for each child) and you’ll be able to go on easy walking trails that’ll take you past untouched mangrove forests and shaded pathways.

Here, you’ll get to walk down a boardwalk to see mud crabs – some striking blue in colour – as well as mudskippers jumping in and out of the shallow swamp.

There’s also an observation tower here you can climb up to take in a bird’s-eye view of the park. Bring along your binoculars or zoom camera to try to spot the many birds here – the Malaysian Nature Society has identified that there are 98 local bird species and 58 migratory ones in the area.

Insects and mosquitos are aplenty in this area, so you’ll want to put on a comfy pair of joggers and long sleeve T-shirt before you head to the park. Mosquito repellents are, of course, essential, but no worries if you left yours at home – you can get one at RM1 at the counter when you purchase your tickets.

– Where to eat –

No road trip in Malaysia is complete without scouting out popular restaurants in the area. Because Jeram is a seaside town, you definitely want to hit up one of the many seafood restaurants here for plates of fresh milk crabs and affordable lala clams and prawns.

Sungai Janggut Seafood Restaurant

Those driving into town from Klang Valley will probably pass through Kampung Sungai Janggut – or “Beard River” – on your way to Jeram. And one of the many seafood restaurants you’ll find hiding out along the river is Sungai Janggut Seafood Restaurant.

Tucked away next to Sungai Janggut and surrounded by factories, this spot serves up affordable, fresh seafood, and with over a hundred menu options to choose from for lunch and dinner.

Nestum Mantis Prawn

There are 10 types of fish on the menu here, with choices of pari, sembilang, and bawal kecil, and 23 different ways to have them, including steamed with ginger, preserved turnips or soy sauce, or deep-fried. Prices depend on the weight of fish, but you can expect starting price points of just RM15.

Other must-try seafood dishes are prawns and lala clams. A comforting bowl of Lala Clams (RM15) in a clear, spicy ginger broth and crispy Nestum Mantis Prawn (RM18) that come generously served with soft-shell prawns are good options to go with here.

You can also opt for classic Chinese dishes of Sweet & Sour Pork (RM18) and Claypot Tofu (RM12), and even more affordable options of Fried Meehoon (RM10) topped with 3 large fresh crabs and Fresh Oysters (RM7/6 oysters) too.

If you’re planning to visit Rainbow Sky Mirror Jetty, you’re sure to bump into River View Seafood Restaurant while at Pasir Penambang. Just outside of Jeram, this restaurant is another seafood foodie haven that’s conveniently located by the jetty and next to a pick-up point for Sky Mirror World tours.

Some must-tries include Fresh Milk Crabs (from RM30/kg) that come in a pool of a mildly-spicy, creamy curry, and the Scallop in Grated Ginger (RM13) which gets served off their shells. Their Homemade Beancurd (RM7), which is deep-fried soft tofu topped with minced pork, is also a popular choice among its customers.

As this restaurant is next to the jetty and a popular tourist location, we recommend hitting it up during off-peak hours for a shorter wait for available tables.

– Where to stay –

The Kabin – a container hotel with beachside views near Pantai Remis

You can only squeeze in so much into your itinerary in a day, so if you’re looking for a place to spend the night in Jeram to extend your stay, consider booking out dates at The Kabin. It’s a container-style hotel that’s just a 5-minute drive from Pantai Remis Beach, with plenty of onsite facilities that are great for families and gatherings.

There are 9 types of rooms housed in container cabins named after cities and countries, such as Busan (RM240/night) which comes with 4 bunk beds, and the family-friendly Hamburg (RM390/night) which comes with a queen bed and 4 bunk beds.

Each room comes with a view – take your pick from garden, beach, or pool views. Families with little ones will want to opt for Santos (RM290/night), that’s located right by the hotel’s swimming and wading pool. It’s a 4-pax room with a full view of the pool right outside your door.

You can even get food delivered straight to you from the hotel’s in-house cafe.

Tangier room at The Kabin

There are plenty of things to check out on its grounds too if you just want to laze around during your staycation here. There’s a lounge with board games, such as Monopoly and Jenga, as well as darts and carrom, to check out. A game of pool (RM5/game) or foosball (RM3/10 balls) is great for some friendly competition.

The karaoke room (RM50/hour) is an added bonus at this hotel, and you’ll find English, Malay, Chinese, and K-pop songs to sing your hearts out.

Lounge at The Kabin

If you do end up wanting to stretch your legs, there’s a basketball court and even a playground here. You can also rent bicycles – tandem (RM14/hour) or single (RM6/hour) – at the front desk to ride them to Pantai Remis beach. Thrill-seekers can also opt for ATVs (from RM30/30 minutes).

There’s plenty to see and do around Malaysia – and Jeram in Kuala Selangor is one of the many examples of this.
