Pour the oat milk or milk of choice into a large pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook the pasta. Once boiling, add in the macaroni noodles and lower the heat to a simmer. Cook, often stirring, until the noodles are al dente, and the liquid has been absorbed, about 10 minutes.

Dairy-free milk Make sure you use an unsweetened milk, sweet cheese sauce is not a good thing. I always use oat milk, as it doesn't really have a flavour of its own which really accentuates the cheesiness!

What can you substitute for milk in macaroni and cheese? ›

To make mac and cheese without milk, the best choice is to find something that has a similar texture and a milk flavor. Things like heavy cream, almond milk, oat milk, yogurt, cream cheese, and even pasta water all work very well in boxed mac and cheese.

Can I use water instead of milk in mac and cheese? ›

You most definitely can use water in place of milk in any pasta recipe including mac and cheese. It is how I make mine, in fact, and it is just as healthy and delicious. The thing is that it will make it not as creamy and perhaps less thick.

How do I substitute oat milk for milk? ›

Using Oat Milk for Baking
  1. A 1:1 ratio of cow's milk to “original” (not extra creamy) is key.
  2. You can manipulate the texture and thickness of oat milk with water or neutral-tasting oils such as grapeseed oil.
  3. Sweetened or flavored oat beverages should be used sparingly because they will affect the flavor.

Swapped in 1:1 for whole milk or water, oat milk will do just fine whisked into a roux for baked pastas, stews, and sauces. I regularly splash it into bubbling braises, reach for it when a curry's reached fiery levels, and use it to unite a chunky vegetable soup in the blender.

Is oat milk fine for mac and cheese? ›

Oat milk is plant-based milk made from oats, and it has a very mild, slightly sweet flavor. However, it can be used as a substitute for cow's milk in mac and cheese. It has a creamy texture, so it can work perfectly in a creamy cheese sauce. Use it as a 1:1 ratio when substituting it for regular milk.

Is oat milk or almond milk better for mac and cheese? ›

Do NOT use regular/sweetened almond milk since this will make the mac and cheese sweet, which is hard to neutralize. If you only have sweetened almond milk, I prefer that you use other plant-based milk (such as oat or soy milk) that is unsweetened instead when making mac n cheese.

How do you thicken oat milk? ›

If you want your oatmilk to be thicker, similar to what you purchase in the store, you will need an added gum. Xanthan gum works great to thicken cold liquids and you don't need much for a batch.

What kind of milk is best for mac and cheese? ›

If you're wondering about making boxed mac and cheese without milk, such as Kraft mac and cheese, you can do that, too! Simply replace the milk with chicken broth or water, melt in a bit of cream cheese, and you'll still end up with a tasty, cheesy meal.

Can I use sour cream instead of milk? ›

In fact, you can substitute sour cream for milk almost anytime the recipe calls for less than a cup of milk. One of the most common ingredients to use milk with is potatoes. Spuds love dairy, so if a recipe calls for milk, sour cream almost always works in its place.
