Air Fryer Zoodles

Just like most I purchased a spiralizer with the plan to make my favourite spaghetti, but a spaghetti that was made of zucchini, carrot, sweet potatoes, or butternut squash. Ideal for my paleo lifestyle.

But what I found is that spiralizers are hard work.

They often break, they often make us bleed and I hate cleaning them. Not to mention it is very easy for your zoodles to become soggy when you cook them in a frying pan.

Well, that was me back in 2016 when everyone was buying a spiralizer.

Eventually what I learnt was that my cute little julienne peeler that I was gifted from a brand many years ago, was a fantastic plan B.

Here it is:

Instead, what it does is, is create a zoodle that is more like a pasta ragu or tagliatelle rather than spaghetti. You can then cook it with whatever flavouring you like and it takes 2 seconds to clean and I have never cut myself.

Today, what I wanted to do was show you how to make these style zoodles in the air fryer for a quick meal.

Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.

What Are Zoodles?

Whenever I mention zoodles, I will often get asked, what they are, from people that have never tried them.

In a nutshell zoodles are a low carb alternative to pasta and the name zoodles is combining zucchini (what us Brits call courgette) and noodles.

You can have it in many ways or just use it instead of spaghetti with your meatballs or Bolognese.

Can You Cook Zoodles In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. A feature of the air fryer is that it is fantastic for your classic stir fry and as zoodles are often cooked in a wok in a similar way, then it makes zoodles in the air fryer PERFECT.

In fact, my son often asks me why I cook with gadgets so much and I remind him that its easier and produces better food.

Can You Cook Frozen Zoodles In An Air Fryer?

Yes you can. It will save you the prep work and then you can load up your frozen zoodles with whatever seasonings you like and air fry them.

Think of it as a time saving way to skip a task.

How Do You Make Zucchini Zoodles Not Soggy?

In the air fryer of course. You see when you make zucchini zoodles in a pan the water from the zucchini (zucchinis are high water content) stays on the zucchini hence why it is often watery and soggy.

However, make air fried zucchini noodles and the water and excess liquid is going into the bottom of your air fryer and not staying local to the zoodles.

This helps create crispy zoodles in the air fryer.

Air Fryer Zoodles Ingredients

You will be pleased to know that the ingredients for making air fryer zoodles is small.

In fact, you only need three things to achieve zoodles:

Zucchini – Also known as the courgette, you need enough to fill the air fryer half full with zoodles. You can also swap this for carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash or a similar vegetable.

Peeler – A good peeler or a spiralizer that will do a good job and create perfect zoodles. This is the one that we recommend if you don’t have one.

Oil – The oil is essential because it stops your zucchini noodles from going soggy. We recommend extra virgin olive oil, though you could use avocado oil instead.

If you are wondering how to cook zoodles in air fryer then its this easy:

  1. Use your julienne peeler to make thick zucchini zoodles.
  2. Toss in a bowl with seasonings and extra virgin olive oil.
  3. Air fry + serve.

What To Do With Your Zucchini Leftovers?

When I make zoodles, I recommend that you peel the zucchini until the zucchini gets really bendy and you can’t do a straight peel. Then you can stop and use the leftover zucchini for something else.

A bit like how I have demonstrated below:

Then you can slice these zucchini bits into little pizza appetizers or you can use them for a batch of air fryer zucchini fritters.

What To Serve With Air Fryer Zucchini Noodles?

In the Milner house we tend to keep it basic with how we enjoy our air fryer zoodles, and it usually involves one of the following:

  • Air Fryer Frozen Salmon
  • Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Breast
  • Air Fryer Frozen Meatballs
  • Air Fryer Cajun Shrimp

You can also mix and match it with your own favourite protein for a quick lunch or dinner.

Notes

Quantities. I did four medium sized zucchinis. You can do the same or less, but note it does shrink a bit during cooking.

Seasonings. You can mix and match your seasonings. We love a Mediterranean mix of flavours, but you could use any dry seasoning.

Leftovers. Because you always end up with a bit of zucchini leftover you can use this for slicing into cubes and then air frying. Or use it to make some our air fryer zucchini pizza slices.

Thanks for reading our air fryer zoodles recipe on Recipe This. We have many more air fryer recipes for you to check out next. Though if you love zucchini I recommend you try our air fryer zucchini fritters next.

FAQs

How do you dry zucchini noodles in an air fryer? ›

Skip the boil entirely and place the noodles straight in the air fryer. With zucchini being 94% water, the air fryer is the perfect place to dry up the excess liquid in the squash. A few minutes in the air fryer yields noodles that are delicately crisp, yet still tender like normal spaghetti.

How do you cook zoodles so they are not mushy? ›

You don't boil them that would make them soggy. To co*k zucchini noodles you toss them in a frying pan, with a little butter, oil or cooking spray, just long enough to heat. Add your sauce and it's done.

Should you salt zucchini noodles before cooking? ›

Don't pre-salt your zucchini noodles.

First of all, one of the benefits of spiralizing is that it's SO quick (just spiralize, cook, and enjoy pasta in under 5 minutes!).

How do you dry in the air fryer? ›

Air fryers are capable of dehydrating food as they function quite similarly to dehydrators. But you must check your own individual air fryer to see what settings you need to use to dehydrate your own food. Your air fryer needs to be on a low heat to be able to dehydrate food, and it must be at a temperature below 45℃.

How long to air-dry homemade noodles? ›

If you want to dry your homemade pasta for future use, spread it in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Leave the pasta uncovered in a dry area for 12 to 24 hours, gently stirring and turning it a few times. Flour is fickle, so humidity, temperature, size of the noodles, etc. will all play a part in the total time.

Why is my fried zucchini soggy? ›

Mushy veggies are also often the result of overcooking. When the interior is loaded with moisture, you have to cook it for much longer to evaporate all of the water and avoid the interior having the unappealing, spongy, raw texture that eggplant and zucchini are notorious for.

How do you make zucchini not rubbery? ›

All you have to do is slice the zucchini into your desired shape, drizzle with oil, season, place on a baking sheet cut-side down, and pop it in the oven until it's nicely browned and tender. This can take 15 to 35 minutes, depending on the size of the zucchini.

Should you drain zucchini noodles? ›

It's quite simple to boil a pot of water, toss in your zucchini noodles and cook for one minute. It's similar to cooking frozen veggies on the stovetop. And once your noodles have cooked, drain the noodles in a colander and serve. If you'd like them super dry, blot them with a paper towel before serving.

Why are my vegetables not crispy from the air fryer? ›

Add a few minutes to the cooking time to account for the veggies having to thaw during the cooking process. The circulating air in an air fryer helps to remove the moisture and crisp the veggies. However, they might not have the same amount of crispness as fresh vegetables.

Do you add water to air fryer for vegetables? ›

To get the very best crispy vegetables with creamy interiors, ATK's Healthy Air Fryer cookbook advises that a mixture of oil and water not only attains a satisfying crunch but also ensures vegetables such as broccoli and fennel don't dry out as they cook and crisp.

How do you keep zoodles from getting watery? ›

Salt and wrap your zoodles.

Let them sit for about 10–15 minutes — just enough time for the salt to extract the moisture. You may have to change the paper towels depending on how damp they get, but a gentle squeeze at the end will drain any leftover water before you sauté.

How do you cook store bought zoodles? ›

Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat, then season the water generously with salt. Add the zucchini noodles and cook until the noodles are crisp tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Use tongs or a spider to immediately transfer the zoodles to a large bowl filled with ice water.

How long will zoodles last in the fridge? ›

If you're storing them in the fridge for more than a day or two, you may want to switch out the paper towels as they become damp. My Verdict – This is the best (and really only) way to store zoodles. They'll last about 4-5 days in the fridge.

How do you dry zucchini quickly? ›

Slice zucchini into disks about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle salt on a large cookie sheet or two, then lay the zucchini on them. Sprinkle more salt on top. Leave at room temperature for 30 minutes if you are going to eat them in the next couple days, or for up to an hour if you plan on preserving these in jars.

What is the best way to dry zucchini? ›

Arrange the zucchini on dehydrator trays, utilizing a mesh liner to prevent the zucchini from falling through the holes as it shrinks. Dehydrate at 125ºF (52ºC) for 6-12 hours until the zucchini is dry and brittle—it should break, not bend (see note 2).

How do you dehydrate zucchini noodles? ›

Dehydrating Zucchini Noodles

Dehydrate zucchini noodles at 135°F (57°C) for 6–8 hours.
